The One Asset You Really Need to Win and Keep the Job You Love

What does it take to get and keep the job you want? Ninety-six percent of employers argue that it's not just about having the right skills for the position — it's all about the right mindset. As two leading experts on the subject, Reed and Stoltz know what employers really want from the people they hire and keep. According to their extensive and globally acclaimed research, there is a specific set of mental traits that will make you exponentially more desirable to potential employers, and more likely to succeed and enjoy your job once you're hired.


The Good, the Grit and the Global

James Reed, chairman of London-based recruitment firm REED, and Paul Stoltz, a consultant and expert on resilience and adversity based in California, combined resources to research exactly what employers were seeking most in the people they hired. As explained in their book Put Your Mindset to Work, Reed and Stoltz discovered that 96 percent of the thousands of employers they interviewed considered the mindset of those they hired more important than their skillsets. Skills matter, of course. But a person with the right mindset for the job can develop the necessary skills. The reverse, in the opinion of these employers, was far less likely.

Not all mindsets are created equal, however. According to the authors, the ideal mindset for work, based on their research, is what they call the 3G Mindset.

The 3G Mindset

Reed and Stoltz asked employers to list the most essential or desirable mindset qualities they sought in the people they hired. The top essential or desirable qualities listed were honesty, trustworthiness, commitment, adaptability and accountability. Other essential or desirable qualities included, among others: determination, loyalty, sincerity, drive, collaborative focus and purposefulness.

When the authors analyzed the responses, they determined that all of the mindset qualities sought by employers could be distilled into one ideal mindset that contained the following three elements, each beginning with the letter "G":

Global. This element of the 3G Mindset is not about being international or multicultural, but about being open to new experiences and new ideas and being able to make connections. Connectivity and Openness are the two "clusters" of traits, the authors write, that make up the Global element. The Connectivity cluster includes mindset qualities such as relationship building and collaborative focus, while flexibility, creativity and curiosity are some of the mindset qualities that fall in the Openness cluster.

Good. This element, according to the authors, is about approaching the world in a way that benefits those around you. Integrity and Kindness are the "clusters" of traits that make up the Good element. Mindset qualities such as honesty, loyalty and dependability are integrated in the Integrity cluster, while Kindness involves qualities such as compassion, generosity and fairness.

Grit. The third element of the 3G Mindset involves the persistence and focus to keep going in spite of setbacks and adversity.

Assessment and Growth

After describing all of the elements and components of the 3G Mindset, the authors point readers to an assessment tool on the book’s website that gauges, through an in-depth questionnaire, in which of these three areas the respondents are strong, and which elements need work.

In subsequent chapters, the authors focus on how to grow and apply the Global, Good and Grit elements, presenting a variety of tools and exercises for each. This is not a book filled with platitudes and inspirational quotes. The early chapters on the authors’ research and the science behind mindsets are followed by action-oriented how-to guides that will help readers improve their work mindset.
